What do you do?

A. Stand at Attention and Salute?

B. Stand at Attention only?

C. Stand at Attention and place right hand over the heart with or without a hat?

1. In Uniform + indoors + National Anthem* = B (Maybe A)

+ Pledge of Allegiance = B ( " " )

+ US flag passes by = B ( " " )

2. In Uniform + outdoors + National Anthem = A

+ Pledge of Allegiance = A

+ US flag passes by = A

3. Out of Uniform + indoors + National Anthem = C

+ Pledge of Allegiance = C

+ US flag passes by = C

4. Out of uniform + outdoors + National Anthem = C

+ Pledge of Allegiance = C

+ US flag passes by = C

5. In Uniform + indoors + "under arms"** + National Anthem = A

+ Pledge of Allegiance = A

+ US flag passes by = A

*National Anthem is used here. This pertains also to others music such as "Taps", "Reveille", "Retreat", "Ruffles and Flourishes" and "Hail to the Chief" and it pertains to rifle/cannon salutes (for instance, a 21-gun salute). Render honors to this other music and to rifle/cannon salutes as you would do for the National Anthem.

**Under Arms means you are carrying a weapon (drill rifle, saber). For the purpose of rendering honors, even when wearing only a pistol belt, you are considered to be "under arms". When "under arms", headgear is worn indoors.
